The finest papier mache cabinet we have ever owned. Scenes of Windsor Castle and Kenilworth Castle.
Maker - MacCallum and Hodson, Summer Row, Birmingham, England.
The secretaire cabinet top depicts a view of Windsor Castle and the front has a romantic ruined castle, probably by artist James Hinks.
In their day MacCullum & Hodson were considered one of the leading papier- mache factories in Birmingham, although their significance has been greatly underestimated. The partnership was in listed in 1835 at premises in Brearley Street, intially described as japanners and the firm was so successful after its display at the Great Exibition in 1851 that it moved to larger premises in Summer Row in 1855. Among artists known to be employed by the firm was James Hinks who specialized in landscapes. In 1866 they took over the business of John Bettridge and in 1920, when the business closed they were the last japanning factory in the city.
